Innovative Practices in TCM Education

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a crystallization of millennia of Chinese cultural wisdom. How can the younger generation deeply understand this discipline? CCC Fong Yun Wah Secondary School has delivered an impressive answer! By establishing a Chinese herb garden and a TCM health club, the school not only integrates traditional TCM knowledge into STEAM education but also engages students in interdisciplinary learning—from planting and technological applications to health practices—allowing them to explore the wonders of TCM holistically.

As advocates of TCM education and STEAM curriculum, we are honored to participate in this project, assisting the school in designing courses, planning the herb garden, and witnessing the students' growth!

The Herb Garden: A Living Classroom

Fong Yun Wah Secondary School’s herb garden is divided into aromatic and medicinal sections, growing dozens of plants such as osmanthus, houttuynia, perilla, and mugwort. This is not just a green corner of the campus but also a "living textbook" for students:

  • Technology Meets Tradition: Students built a webpage for Chinese herbs—scanning QR codes allows them to learn about each herb’s efficacy and applications.

  • Interdisciplinary Learning: Integrating biology, IT, design, and arts brings TCM knowledge to life.

  • Cultural Identity: From hands-on planting to understanding TCM theory, students gain a deeper appreciation of Chinese cultural values.

How Does STEAM Spark Synergy with TCM?

The school’s curriculum perfectly embodies the core concept of "TCM X STEAM":

  • Science: Studying the growth conditions and pharmacological properties of Chinese herbs.

  • Technology: Developing digital tools for herb identification.

  • Engineering: Participating in the planning and construction of the herb garden.

  • Arts: Creating TCM-themed creative works.

  • Mathematics: Quantifying and analyzing plant growth data."This is not just knowledge transfer but also potential discovery—students may even find their future career paths!"

Our Mission: Rooting TCM Education in Schools

This collaboration aligns with our long-term goals:

Curriculum Development: Designing "TCM X STEAM" lesson plans tailored for secondary schools.

Herb Garden Planning: Creating interactive learning spaces, from spatial design to plant selection.

Seeing students enthusiastically participate in TCM courses, build webpages, and even learn acupressure and dietary therapy is the greatest reward for educators!

What’s Next? Bringing More Schools Onboard!

Fong Yun Wah Secondary School’s case proves that TCM education can be both traditional and innovative. We look forward to collaborating with more schools to merge TCM culture with modern education, nurturing a new generation with both global perspectives and cultural confidence!
